Summary

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the viscoelastics Healon and Ocucoat on endothelial cell function and morphology. To evaluate the influence on pump function, the endothelium was perfused and the transendothelial potential was measured. Our results indicate that neither Healon nor Ocucoat had any damaging effect on endothelial function and morphology. Therefore, with regard to endothelial integrity, both substances appear to be suitable to serve as viscoelastics in anterior segment surgery.
