Zusammenfassung
Globale Klimamodelle (GCMs) sind zur Zeit die leistungsfähigsten Hilfsmittel zur Abschätzung zukünftiger Klimaszenarien. Sie sind teilweise in der Lage, komplexe Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Teilsystemen des Klimasystems zu simulieren und können damit grösserskalige (Grössenbereich: Kontinente) Klimaschwankungen oder Klimaänderungen “verstehen“ und wiedergeben. Für kleinere Regionen wie den Alpenraum, welcher zudem im Uebergangsbereich zwischen Mittelmeerklima und Mittelbreitenklima einerseits sowie Ozean und Kontinent andererseits liegt, können globale Klimamodelle nur sehr grobe Antworten geben (AMS 1991, Houghton et al. 1990 and 1992). Sogar im globalen Massstab sind bis heute kaum Klimaprognosen über einen längeren Zeitraum (Jahre, Dekaden) möglich, weshalb viel besser von Klimaprojektionen oder Klimaszenarien gesprochen wird. Ein Klimaszenario ist eine physikalisch konsistente, qualitative bis semiquantitative Beschreibung der zukünftigen Klimaentwicklung, welche auf abgestützten wissenschaftlichen Methoden basiert und zur Abschätzung der Reaktionen von Mensch-Umwelt-Systemen auf zukünftige Klimaänderungen benützt werden kann (Viner and Hulme 1994).
