Part of the book series: Macromolecular Systems — Materials Approach ((MACROSYSTEMS))

Abstract

Elastomeric or rubber-like materials are materials or polymers whose inter-and intra-molecular forces are sufficiently low for the free energy of deformation to be mainly a function of entropy. In the first part of this chapter, hydrocolloids are discussed, which have rubbery compliance because they contain water; in the second part, plasticised glassy polymers are considered these also having a rubber-like compliance.
