Abstract

Ever since the beginnings of clinical radiology, two main factors have contributed to diagnostic progress: technological advance and the development of safe and reliable contrast agents. Often, these two factors have been inextricably linked. Many of today’s accomplishments in X-ray, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine would be unthinkable without the use of contrast agents. In medical ultrasonography, on the other hand, contrast agents are still very much an innovation. In the future, ultrasound contrast media will probably emerge as an important tool. The diagnostic advantages provided by contrast enhancement mean that clinical use of diagnostic ultrasound will dramatically expand and enhanced ultrasound may well become the imaging modality of choice in a wide range of diagnostic applications.
