Abstract

In contrast to conventional angiography, intravascular ultrasound is a technique that provides tomographic, cross-sectional images of the vessel lumen and wall. The first ultrasound catheter was designed more than 20 years ago, but the increasing use of coronary balloon angioplasty and the development of other interventional devices in the 1980s renewed the interest in intravascular ultrasound imaging [1]. As fluoroscopy and angiographic images are indispensable elements of the ultrasound examination, intravascular ultrasound should not be considered as an alternative to angiography but rather as a complementary imaging technique.
