Zusammenfassung
In den 30-er und 40-er Jahren wurde in der psychologischen Abteilung des Instituts für Arbeitsphysiologie in Dortmund ein relativ klares Konzept der menschlichen Lei¬stungsfähigkeit bei geistiger Arbeit entwickelt, das sich mit Hilfe weniger Sätze charakterisieren läßt:

Jedes Individuum besitzt eine Leistungsfähigkeit oder maximale Kapazität, die näherungsweise als eine individuelle Konstante betrachtet werden kann.

Von der Leistungsfähigkeit ist die Leistungsbereitschaft zu unterscheiden. Sie bestimmt die für die Bearbeitung einer Aufgabe bereitgestellte Kapazität und so die tatsächlich erzielte Leistung; in grober Weise entspricht sie dem Verhältnis der Leistung zur Leistungsfähigkeit.

Die Bereitstellung von Kapazität für die Bearbeitung einer Aufgabe ist willkürlich beeinflußbar und geht in der Regel mit physiologischen Kosten einher (z.B. erhöhte Herzschlagfrequenz).
