Abstract

Turbulence comprises a large class of motions with complex, irregular and rather unpredictable natures. An unambiguous definition of the phenomenon is easily arrived at in some reasonably simple flow configurations such as for example, flow in a pipe. However, given the enormous number and variety of degrees of freedom that exist in real-world flows, it has not been possible to arrive at a consistent definition of the phenomenon that can be universally applied to separate turbulence from other complex types of flows, such as waves and large-scale circulation normally associated with weather patterns.
