The History of Ligament Substitutes

  • Chapter
Ligaments and Ligamentoplasties

Abstract

Interest in the relationship between the type of injury, the type of knee ligament lesion, and the stability of articulation dates from the nineteenth century. Hyrtl in 1847 [112] and Hönigschmied in 1893 [110] are reported to have realized the first studies. For the first time in 1885 Mayo Robson [164] described a ligament repair to the level of the knee joint. Since this first publication on ligament lesions and their treatment, studies on knee ligament injuries and descriptions of the various repair and reconstruction procedures have continued to develop. Especially over the past 20 years this literature increased tremendously due to the development of new devices for injured ligaments.
