Zusammenfassung

HIV infection is spreading dramatically to children in our geographical area. Children are still in a fortunate position in that they represent only 2% of the total AIDS cases in Europe and North America, and 20%-30% in Africa and Asia. In contrast, in our country, 93% of the total number of declared AIDS cases occur in children. This represents a new, stränge and obscure type of epidemiology. The outbreak of the epidemic in all districts of the country between 1990 and 1995, involved children born during 1988 and 1989 in 81% of the cases; the source of infection in 69% of the patients is unknown. The peculiar epidemiology of AIDS in our country motivated our Cluster analysis of the HIV subtypes responsible for the infection in our region.
