In den europäischen Ländern ist die Tetanusinfektion mil einer Mortalität von etwa 60% behaftet. Das Clostridium tetani produziert ein Exotoxin, das spezifisch neurotoxisch wirkt und über die peripheren Nerven in das Rückenmark eindringt, wo es inhibitorische Spinalreflexe blockiert.
