Abstract
The arid region includes areas in which the average annual rainfall does not exceed 100mm, whereas in the semi-arid region the average annual precipitation ranges between 100 and 250mm. Under xeric habitats we include areas where the annual rainfall can be higher provided it is restricted to a certain short period of the year; during the rest of the year, there is no precipitation nor any surface water. Temperatures during the summer are generally high in both arid and semi-arid habitats.
