Abstract

Relief of obstructive jaundice by insertion of a biliary endoprosthesis consisting of a tube or metallic stent is an extremely useful palliative therapy for inoperable advanced malignant biliary strictures and has come to be widely employed (UCHIDA et al. 1975; YOSHIOKA et al. 1990). Since 1987 we have used metallic stents as biliary endoprostheses in approximately 200 patients with inoperable advanced malignant biliary strictures. However, to prevent tumor ingrowth into the metallic stent and to enhance the therapeutic results, antitumor treatment is needed, and recently a therapeutic effect has been achieved with the combination of radiation therapy and infusion chemotherapy.
