Abstract

Therapeutic endoscopy has shown a tremendous impact on biliopancreatic diseases in the last two decades. The first landmark of this evolution was set in the early 1970s by Classen in Germany and Kawai in Japan, who performed endoscopic sphincterotomy to extract bile duct stones. Continuing technical improvements in endoscopes and accessories along with the growth of clinical experience all over the world are still constantly pushing back the frontiers of the applicability of nonoperative endoscopic methods. The arsenal of endoscopic treatment for benign biliary disease has been increasing and now includes biliary sphincterotomy and sphincteroplasty, stone extraction with or without lithotripsy, drain and stent placement, and balloon dilation of strictures.
