Abstract

It is estimated that approximately 10%–15% of Americans have gallstones. Of these 20 million Americans (16 million female and 4 million male), 20%–25% will develop acute cholecystitis and 20%–35% will develop symptomatic chronic cholecystitis, while the remainder remain asymptomatic (Anderson 1971; Hardy 1988).
