Abstract

Knowledge of the anatomical details of a particular system is a real need if one is to be able to make correct diagnoses and institute appropriate therapy. Anatomy as a medical discipline has made substantial progress with the aid of modern imaging techniques. Nevertheless, clinical anatomy must cover not only a common description of structures but also an analysis of normal variations. In addition, only by identifying the technical problems related to the performance of a function can a comprehensive approach be made to the subject, allowing anatomical features to be understood before they are memorized. The biliary tract has to be seen as integrated in a whole system, each component of which is interrelated in a logical scheme of construction that guarantees reliability and durability, two major characteristics of human living organs.
