Abstract

In general, cancer incidence is reported in cases per 100 000 population per year. The cumulative incidence for cervical cancer varies from 4.2 in Israel to 48.9 in Goiania (Brazil), where cervical cancer is the most common malignancy in women. This disease is most common in Latin America and Africa, and is less frequent in Jewish and European women. Circumcision of Jewish and Moslem men has in the past been postulated to reduce cervical cancer; however, decreased incidence of cervical carcinoma has not been observed among the partners of non-Jewish circumcised men. Therefore, it is presumed that Jewish women have a genetic resistance to tumor of the cervix (Abou-Daoud 1967).
