Obwohl Griechenland seit 1981 Mitglied der Europäischen Union ist, hat sein Gesundheitssystem immer noch nicht den Standard anderer Mitgliedsländer erreicht, weil trotz einer Erhöhung der Gesundheitsausgaben von 2,9% (1960) auf 5,7% (1993) des Bruttosozialproduktes dies der niedrigste Prozentsatz in der EU ist.
