Abstract
If two bodies of mass m1 and m2 interact with a force that is solely dependent on their separation \( |\overrightarrow r |\, = r = \,|\overrightarrow r _1 - \overrightarrow r _2 | \), it is possible in classical mechanics to isolate the motion of the center of mass, \( \overrightarrow R \, = (m_1 \,\overrightarrow r _1 + m_2 \overrightarrow r _2 )/m \) from the relative motion.
