Zusammenfassung

Österreich und Luxemburg verbieten den Import von genmanipuliertem Mais. In Frankreich stoppt ein Gericht den Handel mit diesem Mais, und gleichzeitig verweigert die französische Regierung transgenem, also in der Erbsubstanz verändertem, Raps die Zulassung, obwohl dieser von der EU bereits zugelassen war. Die politische Stimmung in Europa scheint 1998 feindlich gegenüber Gentechnologie an Pflanzen zu sein, während in den USA genmanipulierte Sorten von Mais, Sojabohne, Raps und Baumwolle 1997 und 1998 von den Farmern so sehr nachgefragt wurden, daß das Saatgut einiger Sorten knapp wurde.
