Zusammenfassung
Die vergleichsweise neuen Disziplinen der molekularen Genetik und der molekularen Biologie haben die Forschung in Biologie und Medizin revolutioniert. Zumindest eine gewisse Vertrautheit mit diesen Fächern ist heute eine Voraussetzung, um die Inhalte von beinahe jeder biomedizinischen Fachzeitschrift lesen und verstehen zu können. Jede Woche werden Krankheitsgene kartiert oder identifiziert, und es wird erwartet, daß in naher Zukunft diese Fülle an positioneller und struktureller genetischer Information in detaillierte funktionelle Daten übersetzt wird, die die Ätiologie bisher kaum verstandener Erkrankungen enträtseln und letztlich zu Verbesserungen bei der Behandlung führen werden.
