Zusammenfassung
Die klinische Psychiatrie befaßt sich in der Regel mit dem Individuum. Wenn wir aber nach allgemeingültigen Grundsätzen suchen und Individual deshalb als Kollektiv betrachten, eröffnet sich das Gebiet der Epidemiologic. Greenwood (1931) hatte diese in seinen Herter-Vorlesungen an der Johns-Hopkins-Universität besonders prägnant als „the mass aspects of disease“ definiert. Der Begriff Epidemiologie leitet sich vom griechischen „epidemios“ ab, zusammengesetzt aus der Vorsilbe „epi“ (unter, innerhalb) und „demos“ (das Volk einer Region oder eines Landes), und bezeichnet eine Krankheit, die sich „in der Bevölkerung verbreitet“ findet. Es ist die Aufgabe psychiatrischer Epidemiologic, diese Verteilung psychischer Erkrankungen in der Bevölkerung zu erfassen, die hierzu ursächlich beitragenden Faktoren zu identifizieren und Maßnahmen zu benennen, die der Prävention solcher Erkrankungen dienen.
