Abstract

Living at the end of a century encourages us to reflect about the past and to direct our thoughts towards the future. The past is often either critically reviewd or romantically idealised whereas the future offers both chances and risks which call for new concepts. Mankind is today faced with the challenge of ecological, social and economic problems on a global scale. The reasons are many - the Brundtland Report “Our Common Future” (World Commission on Environment and Development 1987) is one of the publications concerned with the topic.

We live forward but learn backward and are constantly on the brink of the unknown (Kierkegaard).
