Abstract
At the beginning of the era, about 2000 years ago, the average distance a person travelled in his total life was about 15,000 km, which is 500 km per year (Chatwin, 1988). During the period of industrialisation traffic volume was substituted by other modes of transport (inland waterways, rail) and rose to a world average of 1800 km in 1960. This traffic volume more than doubled to some 4200 passengerkm per year in 1990, with an increasing contribution from air transport (Schafer, 1995).
