Treatment of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency in Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract

The treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency has come a long way. Presently, many patients can be treated satisfactorily with high-strength (≥20,000 Ph.Eur.U. [units of enzyme activity according to the European Pharmacopeia] of lipase per capsule) enteric-coated mini-dose-unit preparations. In some cases, however, treatment remains difficult and a true challenge to the clinician. Insight into the gastrointestinal (patho)physiology of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and properties of the pharmaceutical preparations is prerequisite to the achievement of optimal treatment results.
