Aspects of Coupled Spin-Orbital Degrees of Freedom in d- and f-Electron Systems

Abstract

The long-range order related to orbital degrees of freedom is discussed by taking two examples: one from a 4f-electron system CeB6 and the other from LaMnO3. It is pointed out for CeB6, where an antiferro-quadrupole order occurs, that the magnetic field induces a large octupole moment and it plays an important role. For the latter case an effective Hamiltonian is carefully derived to discuss the electronic mechanism of coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom by taking LaMnO3 as an example.
