Summary

A prospective study in 49 patients suffering from bilateral senile cataract shows a reduction in the incision of 0.25 mm following Acrysof MA 30 IOL (optic diameter 5.5 mm) implantation compared with the fellow eye operated on with MA 60 IOL (optic diameter 6.0 mm). This difference increases with the strength of the IOLs on an average of 0.3 mm. The number of postoperative induced corneal astigmatisms was also found to be lower, due to the shorter incision with 0.32 D on average. There was no significant difference between both types of IOLs regarding functional results and subjective optical phenomena within a postoperative follow-up of 4 months on average.
