Host Response and Vaccine Development to Helicobacter pylori Infection

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 241))

Abstract

Infection of humans by Helicobacter pylori can have various outcomes (Fig. 1). In virtually all cases a state of chronic/active gastritis results from an infection by H. pylori, but whether this gastritis progresses to more severe disease states such as duodenal or gastric ulcers or serves as a precursor to gastric cancer appears to be Influenced by both the host response and bacterial virulence determinants. Bacterial virulence factors have been reviewed elsewhere in this volume (“Mechanisms of Helicobacter pylori Infection: Bacterial Factors”); this chapter focuses on the host response to Helicobacter infections in the context of these virulence factors.
