Abstract

Evaluation of parathyroid morphology is performed essentially for patients in whom the clinical and biochemical presentation of hyperparathyroidism is dominated by hypercalcemia. These clinical and biological anomalies are usually due to a parathyroid adenoma or, less often, to hyperplasia. As a result of their capability to localize abnormal parathyroid glands in the neck and/or mediastinum, imaging studies permit accurate preoperative mapping (Loevner 1996).
