Zusammenfassung
Die wesentlichen Funktionen des Verdauungstraktes, nämlich die Durchmischung von Nahrung, der geordnete Transport von Darminhalt, die Sekretion, die Resorption und die Durchblutung werden durch Nerven reguliert. Alle diese Funktionen laufen nur bei intakter nervaler Versorgung regelrecht ab und fehlen bei extrinsischer und intrinsischer Denervierung. Diese grundlegende Bedeutung des Nervensystems in der Aufrechterhaltung der gastrointestinalen Funktionen wurde erst in den letzten Jahren erkannt.
