Zusammenfassung

Das erworbene Immundefektsyndrom (AIDS) wird hervorgerufen durch eine Infektion mit dem humanen Immundefizienzvirus (HIV), einem RNS-Virus aus der Familie der Lentiviren. HIV infiziert bevorzugt immunkompetente Zellen, die den Oberflächenrezeptor CD4 exprimieren. Die Infektion führt unbehandelt zu einem progredienten Verlust der zellvermittelten Immunabwehr und im Endstadium der Erkrankung zu einem gehäuften Auftreten von sekundären opportunistischen Infektionen und zur Ausbildung von Tumoren.
