Abstract

A growing number of studies suggest that neurotrophic factors may be beneficial in protecting neurons from cell death or in delaying neuronal cell death in in vitro and in vivo models of hypoxic-ischemic CNS injury. Protection from neuronal cell death also leads to a better retention and recovery of neurological and behavioral functions. In this chapter, we review the potential role and utility of neurotrophic factors in the ischemically injured brain.
