Abstract
The difficulties of being human oblige one to create a great psychic structure to bond or in some way cope with the inevitable physical and mental pain to be encountered during one’s lifetime. The individual must start doing this shortly after birth and is able to do it only because of a unique phylogenetic heritage: the capacity for symbolic functioning.
