Abstract
The periodontium is made up of tissues that invest and support the teeth, including gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and supporting bone (Fig. 15.1). Gingiva surrounds a tooth and is contiguous with the periodontal ligament and with the mucosal tissues of the mouth. Attached gingiva is the portion that is firm, dense, stippled, and tightly bound with connective fibers to the underlying periosteum, cementum, and bone. The free gingiva, constituted by marginal and papillary gingiva, surrounds the tooth and is not directly attached to the tooth surface. A gingival sulcus (S) surrounds the tooth.
