Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung der Halbleiterfertigung und der Mikroelektronik führte in den vergangenen Jahren zu einer atemberaubenden Steigerung der Computerleistung, die dank radikaler Fortschritte im Bereich der Molekularelektronik und der dazugehörigen Nanotechnik auch mittelfristig ungebremst scheint. Diese Steigerung der verfügbaren Rechenleistung hat revolutionäre Auswirkungen auf Industrie, Wissenschaft, auf das gesamte Leben der Menschen, ihre Art zu produzieren, zu kommunizieren, zu konsumieren. Die Verbindung dieser Computerleistung mit den manipulativen Fortschritten der Physik und dem vertieften genetischen Wissen wird weitere gewaltige Veränderungen auslösen (Joy 2000).
