Zusammenfassung
Neuromodulation bezeichnet — im Gegensatz zur raschen, punktgenauen und ionenkanalgekoppelten Neurotransmission — vergleichsweise langsame, globale und in der Regel G-Protein-gekoppelte Prozesse, die globale Parameter der zentralnervösen Informationsverarbeitung verändern. Psychiatrisch relevante Neuromodulatoren sind u.a. Dopamin, Noradrenalin und Serotonin. Änderungen von Neuromodulationssystemen gehen mit subjektiven Veränderungen von Motivation, Affekt und Aufmerksamkeit einher.
