Abstract
The paper explains how the use of calorimetric techniques can lead to a dramatic increase in the accuracy of measurement of both total and stray load losses in induction motors. Analysis of the errors involved in determining stray load loss from total and component losses is. The need for a separate generated supply is explained. An explanation of the calorimetric technique is given together with details of a particular design. Accuracy is ±5.6 W on the 3.2 kW range. The repeatability of the loading system, and calorimeter was developed to be ±8W when testing 7.5 kW motors. A comparison is presented for a 30 kW motor of carefully obtained C390 results and Calorimeter results for stray load loss.
