Zusammenfassung
Der Respirationstrakt unterliegt zwangsläufig dem Einfluß der Stoffe, die in der Atemluft enthalten sind. Wir Menschen und alle Heterotrophen benötigen den Sauerstoff, Pflanzen vor allem das Kohlendioxid in der Luft. Daneben gibt es aber noch andere Spurenstoffe in der Luft, die sowohl Pflanzen als auch Tiere schädigen können und zuweilen Krankheitssymptome hervorrufen. Bei den Pflanzen sind es gasförmige Spurenstoffe, die das Wachstum und die Entwicklung beeinträchtigen; dazu gehören Schwefeldioxid (SO2), Ozon (O3) und andere, heute weniger bedeutsame Gase wie Fluorwasserstoff (HF). Menschen und Tiere werden konzentrationsabhängig von biotischen wie abiotischen Luftkomponenten beeinträchtigt: Dazu gehören sowohl Gase wie SO2, O3, NOx als auch verschieden große Partikel, die sowohl abiotisch (Silikat-Stäube, Asbest, Ruß) als auch biotisch (Pollen, Bakterien, Viren) sein können. Hier soll gleich eingangs und auch definitiv festgestellt werden, daß die dramatischsten Einflüsse auf den menschlichen Respirationstrakt durch das Rauchen gesetzt werden; Rauchen stellt zweifellos die schwerste „Luftverschmutzung“ für das Individuum und die unmittelbare Umgehung dar („Passivrauchen“). Wichtig ist die Feststellung, daß die verschiedenartigsten Einflußnahmen zu recht ähnlichen Symptombildern führen können. Es handelt sich um Entzündungsreaktionen, die entweder die Atemwege oder die Lungenfunktion direkt beeinträchtigen. Die Kombination der drei Faktoren

Vorsensibilisierungen und andere Umweltnoxen
greift auf allen Stufen der Entwicklung einer Schädigung in den pathologischen Prozeß oder in die Ausprägung der Symptome einer sensitiven Reaktion ein. Diese Faktoren bestimmen zweifellos die Empfindlichkeit eines Organismus gegenüber einem „Schadstoff“ und entscheiden, ob eine Person z. B. zu den Ozon-„Respondern“ gehört oder nicht.
