Zusammenfassung
Durchfallserkrankungen stellen in den Ländern der„Dritten Welt“ ein erhebliches gesundheitspolitisches Problem dar. Es wird geschätzt, daß ca. 5–8 Millionen Kinder pro Jahr an dieser Erkrankung versterben [11]. In den industrialisierten Nationen der westlichen Welt sind akute Diarrhöen fast ausschließlich für bestimmte Risikogruppen (immunsupprimierte Patienten (u.a. HIV), Kinder unter 4 Jahren, ältere und hospitalisierte Patienten) eine ernsthafte Bedrohung. Dies belegt eine Studie aus den USA, wonach in den Jahren 1979–1987 im Mittel 14 von 100 000 Personen über 74 Jahre sowie 1,5–2 von 100 000 Kindern unter 4 Jahren an akuter Diarrhö verstarben [2]. In der Gruppe der 5–24 Jährigen ist diese Rate < 0,1.
