Palynological Data Indicating Glacier Growth and Environmental Conditions

  • Chapter
Southern Hemisphere Paleo- and Neoclimates

Abstract

At the Quebrada Benjamín Matienzo, a high valley in the Cordillera Principal of the Central Andes, an organic mineral deposit has been examined. Fossil pollen assemblages from the past 6400 years have been compared with modern the pollen assemblage characteristic for the region. Environmental conditions of the past 6400 years were inferred, including paleowind directions, glacier growth and water availability. In order to trace potential environmental gradients, the inferred environmental conditions have been compared with the environmental conditions, especially glacier advances and retreats, from other key sites inside and outside South America.
