Zusammenfassung
Allgemein wird eine epidemiologische Betrachtungsweise des Alterungsprozesses immer verbunden mit negativen Aspekten wie Mortalität, Gebrechlichkeit oder Pflegebedürftigkeit. Diese Sichtweise beruht auf einer Vorstellung, die geprägt ist von epidemiologischen Untersuchungen an jüngeren Personen. Dabei wird der enorme Fortschritt, der in den letzten Jahren sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch zu verzeichnen ist, nicht ausreichend wahrgenommen. Ziel diese Kapitels ist es daher, die wesentlichen Konzepte und Forschungsergebnisse zu den Themen aktive Lebensjahre, chronische Krankheiten und funktionelle Defizite aufzuzeigen und so aufgrund dieser neuen oder zumindest anderen epidemiologischen Perspektive neue Wege für die Prävention und Behandlung älterer Menschen zu eröffnen.
