Pollution reduction in motor car exhaust gases by regulation of the fuel mixture with the lambda-sensor

  • Chapter

Abstract

For the optimal function of three way catalytic converters in petrol engines an exactly defined oxygen content in the exhaust gases is necessary, in order to reduce hydrocarbons (CH), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxides (NOx) as much as completely. The oxygen content in the hot exhaust gases is measured by use of a lambda-sensor. The mode of operation is based on the principle of a galvanic oxygen concentration cell combined with a solidstate electrolyte, which is composed of zirconium dioxide (partially stabilized by yttrium oxide). This device regulates the stochiometric air to fuel ratio (lambda control).
