Abstract
In today’s global society, obesity is a problem that affects both industrialized and developing countries. Approximately 35% of American women and 3 1 % of American men over 2 0 are overweight or obese (SHAPE U P AMERICA 1996). The evidence is overwhelming that obesity, measured by a body mass index, or BMI greater than 27.8 for males and 27.2 for females has adverse affects on health and longevity and diet (NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH CONSENSUS DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE STATEMENT HEALTH IMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY).
