Obesity: Pathology and Therapy

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 149))

Abstract

The energy balance equation, which implies that changes in body energy are equal to the difference between mean daily energy intake and expenditure, has been the main guideline to plan dietary regimens in the context of weightreducing programs for decades. In dietetic practice, low-calorie and very lowcalorie diets represent two popular dietary approaches that are based on this guideline and that are still promoted by many agencies and health professionals. These diets permit a substantial energy deficit but clinical experience has also revealed that they do not favor the adherence to healthy food habits and that they are frequently followed by a considerable weight regain (HENSRUD et al. 1994; WEINSIER et al. 1995).
