Zusammenfassung
Die Hauptformen affektiver Störungen, mit denen sich dieses Kapitel befaßt, namlich Major-Depression, bipolare Störungen und die Dysthymie, können in der internationalen Gesamtschau als epidemiologisch gut untersucht gelten. Allerdings muß einschränkend darauf hingewiesen werden, daß dies nur für den Bereich der deskriptiven Epidemiologie gilt, also für die Feststellung von Prävalenz, vermeintlichen Risikofaktoren sowie möglicher Komplikationen (z.B. Komorbidität). Weniger gut ist die Erkenntnislage hinsichtlich relevanter Risikofaktoren, versorgungs-epidemiologischer Aspekte, depressionsbezogener Behinderungen, hinsichtlich des Spontanverlaufs sowie der Inzidenz affektiver Störungen in verschiedenen Altersgruppen. Defizite bestehen ferner bezüglich anderer, den affektiven Störungen zurechenbarer Erkrankungsformen wie der Anpassungsstörung, Mischbildern, kurzen wiederkehrende depressive Störungen sowie unterschwelligen Depressionen („subthreshold” oder „minor depression”), die auch mit erheblichen psychosozialen Einschränkungen einhergehen können.
