Zusammenfassung
Es hat für geistig behinderte Menschen in diesem Jahrhundert in nahezu samtlichen Lebensbereichen dramatische Veranderungen gegeben. Zu den bemerkenswertesten gehort, wie sich die Einstellung der Gesellschaft mit einer Abkehr von der Ideologie der Ausgrenzung und einer Zuwendung zu integrativen Bemühungen gewandelt hat. Ebenso beeindruckend sind die Fortschritte etwa auf den Gebieten der Zytogenetik, molekularen Genetik und Teratologie, die es ermoglicht haben, einige der Ursachen geistiger Behinderung aufzuklaren. Schon diese beiden Beispiele aus so unterschiedlichen Feldern wie dem gesellschaftlichen und dem biologischen Bereich machen deutlich, welche Bedeutung diesen Veranderungen zukommt.
