Zusammenfassung

Ob ein Land als Entwicklungsland eingestuft wird, hängt von einer Reihe von Kriterien abo Einige dieser Kriterien schein en eindeutig: i. allg. haben die betreffenden Länder ein geringes Pro-Kopf-Einkommen, ihre Kommunikationssysteme sind unzureichend (was wieder urn einen effizienten Transport von Menschen, Gütern und Information verhindert), die Gesundheitsindikatoren zeugen von einer unnötig hohen Sterblichkeitsrate (z. B. als Folge einer hohen Kindersterblichkeit), die Krankenzahlen sind hoch und der Bildungsstand der Bevölkerung als Ganzes ist niedrig. Treffen all diese und eine Reihe anderer, ähnlicher Anzeichen zu, ist man sich schnell einig darüber, daß dieses Land in seiner Entwicklung zurückliegt, oder-falls die meisten dieser Indikatoren zeigen, daß sich das Land in einer sehr schwierigen Situation befindet-man entscheidet, daß es in die Kategorie der „am wenigsten entwickelten Länder“ gehört. Momentan befinden sich etwa 40 Länder in dieser letzten Kategorie. Die Bevölkerungszahlen dort sind jedoch relativ gering und zusammengenommen stellen sie nur einen bescheidenen Anteil der Weltbevolkerung und der Menschen in den Entwicklungsländern dar.
