Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 44))

Abstract

Poncirus is closely related to Citrus, and only one species, Poncirus trifoliata Raf. (Trifoliate orange), is recognized in this genus. This species is cultivated in China, Japan, Europe, and North America, and is sometimes used as a hedge, and the dried fruits as a medicine in China (Hodgson 1967). It is also used as a rootstock for most citrus trees in Japan because it results in a compact tree useful in different fields of citrus cultivation. This plant is cold-hardy and resistant to citrus tristeza virus, but susceptible to citrus exocortis viroid. Citrus trees grafted on trifoliate orange usually show high yields and good fruit quality in Japan.
