Zusammenfassung
Der Diabetes mellitus ist heute die häufigste Stoffwechselerkrankung in den Industrienationen. Bezüglich der Fortpflanzung bereitete zunächst der Typ 1-Diabetes die größten Schwierigkeiten. Vor der Insulin-Ära erlebten sehr viele erkrankte Frauen das fertile Alter nicht oder es kam zu keiner Schwangerschaft, weil im Rahmen der Grunderkrankung nur selten eine Ovulation eintrat. Bei den wenigen in der Literatur beschriebenen Schwangerschaften überlebten die Kinder die Geburt fast nie um mehr als Tage, wenn es nicht schon zum Absterben der Frucht im Mutterleib gekommen war. Auch von den Müttern ist bekannt, dass sie bei den Schwangerschaften und Geburten und postpartal schwere lebensbedrohliche Krisen durchliefen. Seit Einführung des Insulins ist die Fertilität der Typ 1-Diabetikerinnen stetig angestiegen und sie ist heute praktisch mit derjenigen von stoffwechselgesunden Frauen vergleichbar (Burkart 1992). Man rechnet mit einem Anteil von 0,4% Typ 1-Diabetikerinnen an allen Schwangeren.
