Die Entwicklung des modernen Kniegelenkersatzes wurde maßgeblich von zwei Institutionen mit unterschiedlichen Philosophien geprägt Im Hospital for Special Surgery in New York wurde von J. Insall und CS, Ranawat die Resektion beider Kreuzbänder empfohlen, während R.D. Scott und TS. Thornhill im Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston den Erhalt des hinteren Kreuzbandes propagierten.
