Zusammenfassung
Die heutige Praxis, Schlafentzug als therapeutische Maßnahme bei depressiven Syndromen einzusetzen, geht auf den früheren Direktor der Tübinger Nervenklinik, Walter Schulte (1910–1972), zurück.2 Erfahrungen einzelner Patienten, dass eine durchwachte Nacht von einem depressionsfreien Tag gefolgt war (Schulte 1966, 1969) veranlassten ihn, systematische Untersuchungen dazu durchführen zu lassen. Von den ersten 34 prospektiv untersuchten Patienten reagierten alle 23 endogen Depressiven auf Schlafentzug (SE) für eine Nacht mit beträchtlicher, wenngleich unterschiedlich stark ausgeprägter Besserung ihrer Symptome, die 11 neurotisch Depressiven wiesen nur geringe Veränderungen auf (Pflug u. Tölle 1971). Seitdem hat der SE sowohl in der Depressionstherapie wie in der Depressionsforschung einen gewissen, wenngleich eher bescheidenen Rang behauptet; bescheiden deshalb, weil der Erfolg der Maßnahme unsicher und ihre Wirkungsdauer zumeist auf wenige Tage begrenzt ist.
Denn ein verkürzter und in der Qualität mangelhafter Schlaf zeitigt fast unfehlbar nachteilige Wirkungen auf meine nervöse Spannkraft…: der schlechte mit fataler Sicherheit, der kurze nicht ebenso unbedingt. Jedermann weiß ja, dass das„Ein wenig, aber fest und gut“ des Junkers von Stolzing gelegentlich seine Vorzüge hat und man nach ungewohnt kurzem Schlaf zuweilen — undeutlich, warum gerade diesmal — besonders frisch, heiter und ruhig ans Werk geht. Aber nur einmal! Denn mehrere Nächte hintereinander zu spät ins Bett kommen heißt für mich jedenfalls in einen Zustand der Insuffizienz geraten, der mir der widerwärtigste auf Erden ist.
